Metro Diner – What have you done?

Friday, 2/28/2020:

Hubby loves fish and several local restaurants have been advertising Friday Fish Fry deals, so he gave me the choice of MCL Cafeteria or Metro Diner for dinner tonight. I chose Metro over MCL because I know they have the best chicken pot pie around and that sounded great to me. I knew what I wanted so, to be fair, I didn’t actually read the menu other than to make sure they still offered chicken pot pie and there was only the one size. When I ordered it, the waitress told me it had been improved by replacing the old crust with puff pastry and that the sauce was much creamier and better tasting than it used to be. I told her I would try it and hoped that they hadn’t messed it up too badly, because it was awesome the way it always had been.

Metro Diner New Menus This is the new menu, in case you are interested. Not to be confused with the Old Menu from December 29, 2019 via The Internet Archive Way Back Machine (I just love that they archive the internet!).

So the new version is shown nice and big below. The puff pastry was alright, but not nearly as good as the crust they used to have.

Tender chicken, roasted carrots, celery and mushrooms, green peas in our velvety cream sauce and topped with a golden, flaky puff pastry. 990 cal.

Now here is the old version from the archived menu:

Chicken Pot Pie

Loaded with fresh baked chicken, lima beans, corn, carrots, peas and French cut green beans. Topped with a homemade biscuit crust. Regular or Jumbo.

I am not a huge fan of lima beans but know they come in mixed vegetables and eat them anyway. But the real deal breaker for the new version which would have been a deal breaker and kept me from ordering if I had bothered to read the menu, were the MUSHROOMS! They kept the carrots but took away their bright cheerful color by roasting them to a sickly brown. There were very few peas in the new version and to make it all fancy, they took out all traces of the corn, green bean and lima beans in favor of MUSHROOMS! Yuk! I wasn’t a fan of the new sauce either. It seemed stripped of all chicken flavor, in my opinion. I will NOT be ordering the chicken pot pie again, that is for sure. I can get tastier versions from the grocer’s frozen food section and likely feed a whole crowd for the $11.99 cost of the new fancy chicken pot pie at Metro Diner. What were they thinking? The waitress said about 50% of customers love the new version but the other 50%, like me, do not care for it.

So, hubby got his Friday fish and chips and it looked like the photo below.

Wild caught North Atlantic cod fillets, beer battered and fried crispy, with tartar sauce, cole slaw and seasoned fries. 1040 cal.

Now here is the old version from the archived menu:

Fish & Chips

Wild caught north Atlantic Cod fillets lightly fried. Served with French fries, cole slaw and tartar sauce.

If you compare the descriptions, it really seems like they were trying to figure out new words to add to their descriptions.

I may go back to Metro Diner and give them another chance, and if I do, I will try another favorite, the chicken salad sandwich.

Now here is the old version from the archived menu:

White Meat Chicken Salad

Chicken, pecans, mayo, celery and grapes on white bread.

This is the location we went to, in case anyone was wondering:

Clearwater Crossing

3954 E. 82nd Street Indianapolis, IN 46240
Hours
Mon – Thu: 7:00am – 3:00pm
Fri & Sat: 7:00am – 10:00pm
Sun: 7:00am – 9:00pm

Metro Night Menu (New)

Have you ever had a favorite dining place change their menu enough to turn you away from going there? When I talked to the manager, and suggested they serve both varieties of chicken pot pie, maybe on different nights or something, he said it was a corporate decision and they had to serve the new version from now on. What a shame. The prices went up. It cost over $30 (with the tip) for hubby and I to get the two meals pictured and then Hubby had a cup of chili as well, but we both drank water which was, of course, free of charge. I just was not impressed. We have been going to Metro for years and really liked it, but I can’t say I am excited about the prospect of going back any time soon.

Review: “Steamables” Red Potatoes

I have found a new and easy “cheat” for dinner time. Yep, you guessed it. These little bags of potatoes can be bought at my local Meijer store for just $2.99. These are just perfect for the two of us with no leftovers and no way for us to overeat. They are so perfect and yummy straight from the bag, hot out of the microwave. No need for butter or toppings of any kind. They are delicious just the way they are and Hubby agrees.

The flavor is so good, I eat them naked. Not me, silly! The potatoes are naked, I am fully clothed while eating, I assure you. We have splurged on these little gems about three times so far. Yes, I know you can get a lot more potato for you money in a much bigger bag, but sometimes it is all about convenience and portion control.

Yes, I can read. The bag says it contains four servings. That means the photos below contain two servings each. There were exactly eight small potatoes in this particular bag, and yes, we each ate four potatoes or two whole servings each. No, I am not skinny, why do you ask? Note the potatoes below may appear larger than actual size. It’s a close-up folks. I was doing my level best to capture the yummy taste in a photo, no do NOT lick your screen. Just go get a bag and give them a try if you want. They aren’t cheap as potatoes go, but perhaps you could give up one of those fancy coffees “they” think you are buying all the time and busting your budget all to pieces for and try something new for a change.

Yes, I cut through that potato with just the side of my fork. They are that tender.

These were so good, I just had to tell you about them. If you have tried them, let us know what YOU thought in the comments below.

Review: Aqueon Aquarium Water Changer

Water Changer

We did one of our least favorite tasks this past weekend and I realized that it wasn’t nearly as dreaded as it used to be. The task has been made immensely easier because of Hubby shopping on Amazon. He ordered this thing and I wasn’t sure it would work, but I stand corrected. We have used the Aqueon Aquarium Water Changer with the addition of the ATP Vinyl-Flex PVC Food Grade Plastic Tubing, Clear, 1/2″ ID x 5/8″ OD, 100 feet Length  hose to siphon the water out of our aquariums and then fill them back up. This entire set up was less expensive than a nice dinner out and has saved us so much trouble and pain.

The water routine changes are so much easier since we started using it. We simply get it off the hook in the basement where we store it when it is not in use and attach it to the faucet in the laundry tub. The the other end of the hose goes up the two flights of stairs into the room with the turtle tank. Hubby hollers down for me to turn it on and I just turn the cold faucet on all the way with the valve open so the water goes through the part that attaches to the faucet and the suction begins. Soon there is dirty turtle water flowing into the sink and straight down the drain. It works so much better than the ones we used in the past where the siphon was a squeezable section and the hose was only about five foot long, so we siphoned the water into a bucket then emptied the buckets into the toilet. These buckets were heavy and awkward and sometimes sloshed water through the house on the way to the bathroom to empty them.

This tool vacuums the gravel off without sucking it up, cleaning it while leaving it safely in the tank. When the right amount of water has been siphoned out of the tank, all you have to do is reverse the valve and the water begins to fill the tank. This is the point where I usually turn the hot water on full blast also so it doesn’t get too cold for the fish or turtle. when the tank is full, Hubby has me turn it back to the siphon setting so he can safely bring the hose back down to the basement, wind it back up and hang it on the hook.

According to the manufacturers, “While vacuuming gravel, the key to thorough cleaning is water flow. Just the right amount of water flow will meticulously agitate the gravel to remove loose dirt while reducing the amount of water that dispenses into the sink. The easy-grip molded handle on the gravel tube includes a built-in on/off valve for total water flow control at your fingertips. The same valve on the sink attachment can be adjusted to reduce splashing of dirty water in the sink.”

Below are some photos of the wonder tool in action from the basement side. Since Hubby always mans the top and I always man the bottom, I can’t tell you what it looks like from the other end, but Hubby loves it and thinks he has the better end of the deal and I think the bottom is easy too. The last photo shows how we store our hose assembly between uses. Pay no attention to any mess shown in these photos, it is all an optical illusion. Yes, really.

We got the version with the twenty five foot hose because at the time that was the only one available and Hubby thought it would be plenty long enough. I think at the time he was also thinking we could attach it to the kitchen sink or the bathroom sink faucets, but it wouldn’t have been an easy connection to either of those and was much cheaper and easier to just get the one hundred foot food grade hose we bought to switch out for the original hose. We ended up cutting about twenty five feet off so it wasn’t quite so unwieldy, and that still left up plenty to cover the three floors in our house.

If you have pools or aquariums or other things that you fill or empty water in and out of you should really consider getting this handy little tool. It might just save your life. Actual life saving assumes wet slippery floors and steps and slipping and sliding or pulling something from lifting and emptying heavy buckets of water. Results may vary and are not guaranteed but seriously, avoid the strain and mess of lifting heaving buckets of dirty fish or turtle water and get one of these, you will be so glad you did. Please note that the links in this post are affiliate links and if you choose to buys something after clicking on one of them, I might ear a penny or two without any additional cost to you.

Review: Imperfect Produce

We are subscribed to get a Mixed Fruit & Veggie Small Box every other week from Imperfect Produce. It came highly recommended by my friend Jayme. I decided to at least give it a try because the first week would be really cheap because I would get $10 off my first order. I knew it would also give my friend a $10 credit for referring me, so it was a no-brainer.

Here is what the website looks like when I log in. It is so cute! The site is easy to use and navigate, so keep reading to see the awesome photos of my first three orders.

Our first delivery 1/18/2019 Total Cost: $8.09 (included the $10 off 1st order deal)

Second Delivery 2/1/2019 Total Cost: $15.99

Third Delivery 2/15/2019 Total Cost: $19.37

Note this is the blurb and my referral link:

Hey, check out Imperfect! They have amazing produce, delivered to your door. Here’s $10 to shop and create your imperfect box. You can thank me later 🙂”

If you think getting produce delivered might be right for your household, please consider using my link to start your subscription. You can customize, pause to stop your subscription at any time.

We decided to save on shipping costs by getting it delivered only every other week for now. So far we have used everything from our deliveries. The only imperfections we have noticed have been either very small or very large sized produce as compared to what we are used to seeing in the stores. The 2nd order had 6 mandarins and they were a good size, but the 3rd order when we got them again came with 6 mandarins that were smaller than the tiniest cuties we have ever seen. The apples are very tiny also, but really good. This is a great way to try new produce. They also have many recipes on the website to help you find ways to use the produce you order. In case you don’t want to be surprised by what is in your box, you can customize the order for a window of time the week before delivery. We tinkered a bit with ours and I let Hubby help me decide what to opt out of and what to add in. The 3rd order, we opted for 3 pounds of sweet potatoes, and we got three huge individual sweet potatoes in our box. Some items are offered in both organic and regular versions for just a slight price increase.

I was poking around on the website after customizing my 3rd order and found several good looking recipes. Hubby was excited to try Butternut Squash Brownies so I printed it out and even though we didn’t get the butternut squash from Imperfect Produce, we did try this recipe and the brownies are truly amazing! I got my super picky sister to try them (she still doesn’t know what was in them) and she thought they were too chocolatey (like that is even possible!), hubby said the same thing. I loved them but wouldn’t have wanted to take the time and make the effort to make them myself. The squash we bought had enough to make three plus batches of this recipe. Think of the veggies you could sneak into your family while reinstating dessert in their lives!

I feel like the box is worth getting because the produce is fresher than what we find in the grocery stores. I have included screenshots of the order summaries in this post in an effort to show you what it is really like to use this service. I would imagine prices would be different depending on where you live, we are in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Have you tried a subscription food delivery service? Which one and what did you think? Are there others you would like to have us test for you?

Review: Let’s Roam App & ScavengerHunt.com

Last year, for Christmas, we got a voucher for a scavenger hunt adventure. It took us an entire year and an expiration date looming over our heads to finally get a chance to use it. The time we finally got all of us together with a couple of hours free to use it, was on Christmas Day this year (actually about 7:30-9:30pm). That’s what happens when you have four adults living in three households and two cities with five jobs and lots of other commitments and responsibilities between us to have to work around our various schedules. Something to consider when giving the gift of an experience that has an expiration date, just saying.

voucher

I’m not worried about posting this scan of the voucher here because it has already been used and is about to expire anyway. This is what we were given, so first, we had to do some digging to figure out how to redeem it. I have seen tons of ads for the company on Facebook over the last few months. All their ads and website seem more concerned with selling their scavenger hunts than actually redeeming the voucher after someone presents it to you. To be fair, that IS their business, but they didn’t make it easy to use the voucher, in my opinion. It isn’t as intuitive as they seem to think, but we muddled through and made it happen thanks to our twenty-something kids. We all had to download the Let’s Roam App (this could have been a problem if we had limited data or space for additional apps on our phones). We also had to make sure our phones were fully charged before we started or bring battery packs with us (we did some of both). The screen is on constantly unless you turn it off to save battery.

I was disappointed that there are only 2 choices for hunts in our city (Indianapolis). I have to say that after living here all my life I had never walked around the areas the hunt had us exploring, so that was pretty cool. It was cold and I’m not supposed to be walking that much in my walking boot, but I did it anyway. The ads I saw online with sales for the holiday were priced at about $11 per person. The hunt we chose was rated as hard, 1.7 miles, focused on history and 1.5 hours long. Given all that, I suppose this is a fair price for entertainment, but not exactly cheap. The teacher in me thinks that fourth graders studying Indiana History would love this interactive activity. The cheapskate in me thinks next time we could save money with fewer tickets and sharing the phones because two would have been plenty.

Basically, after everyone gets into the hunt and on the team, they have to choose which role they want to take in the adventure. I chose to be the photographer. These screenshots were all taken after the fact because it was too cold to worry about that while we were doing the hunt.

I have to say the app is very slick looking and worked well on our various phones, so no problems there.

These are the photos we took on my phone during the hunt. Many were taken to fulfill specific tasks that were asked of us during the game. (Fast food, blackbird, foreign currency, black and white dog, etc.)

We chose a very peaceful time to do this hunt. There was almost nobody out in downtown on Christmas night, so we had the run of the area without worrying about other people wondering what we were doing. There was almost no traffic, and the weather, though cold at about 40 degrees F, was tolerable with our winter coats and gloves on (Texting Gloves for the win!)

Would we do it again? Probably, if all of us were healthy and not gimpy like I was. We would likely choose to do it on the spur of the moment instead of racing the calendar trying to fit it into our already tight schedules so as not to waste the money that was spent on the gift. Now that we’ve done it once, it wouldn’t be nearly as intimidating. That is why I wanted to post screenshots and such for you here. If you need help, give me a holler, I can try to walk you through it.

I’d like to see more tours offered in a city the size of Indianapolis. I would like to see more handicap-friendly options too. I would seriously consider using this as a way to see a new city on a vacation or weekend getaway. It would also be nice to see driving tours too, and maybe they do have them, but just not here.

Have you ever tried something like this? Tell us about it in the comments. I’d love to get other recommendations on sightseeing in your own city.
