(Submitted by Merril Bourne) Chicago Tribune July 10, 1915 DEATH OF DUDLEY SOLON, WEST SIDE POLITICIAN Saloonkeeper's Place Was for Generation the Rendezvous of Ward Lead Dudley Solon, for forty years a Chicago saloonkeeper, died yesterday at his residence, 3243 Ogden avenue. He was 65 years old. In early days Solon's saloon, at Fourteenth and Margaret streets, was the rendezvous of west side politicians. "Billy" Loeffler, the Cook boys -- John and "Billy" -- the elder Carter Harrison, Pat Morris, Frank Lawler, Johnny Powers, "Red" Sheridan, and a dozen other west side leaders, were on intimate terms with the proprietor. It used to be saying that "the way Solon goes, so goes the election." Solon's saloon was in the old Ninth ward, the battle ground of many a hard political fight. Redistricting of the city has placed it in the Twentieth ward. In 1896, when John Bennett was alderman of the Ninth ward, he had an ordinance passed changing the name of Margaret street to Solon place. It was done as a mark of distinction to the man who for many years conducted a saloon at the head of the little street, which is only one block in length. Solon moved to Ogden avenue about ten years ago. He is survived by his widow and a daughter, Mrs. Margaret Murphy.
