James P. Solon, a respected resident of Eagle for over seventy years, passed away at his home

Agnes A. Solon SUMMONS IS ANSWERED BY MRS. A. SOLON
Sorrow Spreads Over City At Announcement of Passing-Funeral Friday.
Universal sorrow spread over the city last evening, in the wake of the appalling, though
expected word, that death had claimed the life of Mrs. A.A. Solon, at her home, 112 Second street,
as a result of a complication of diseases, from which she had been a sufferer for the past four
months. The end came at 4:30 o'clock Tuesday evening, with her husband, the family physician and
nurse at her bedside. Throughout the day there had been a constant vigil while death hovered
near, but through it all, the spirit and determination of the patient went unbroken to the last.
The passing of Mrs. Solon marks the close of an unusual career. At an early age she entered the
office of the law firm of Reeves and Boys, filling the position of stenographer. Thirty-seven
years have passed since she took up her duties there, but regardless of change and management,
she continued in her official capacity, giving such extreme satisfaction, her employers felt
almost helpless without her expert service.
Mrs. Solon had a keen mind, adaptable to the intricacies and complications of the legal profession.
She began her career in the local law office just before Mr. Reeves was sent to Congress from this
district, and after his death, when the firm became known as Boys, Osborn and Griggs, she
continued her work with them.
Following Mr. Griggs removal to Chicago, the firm became known as Boys and Osborn, and recently
Byron Hayes was made a member of the local staff of attorneys. Regardless of change, Mrs. Solon
carried on. She seldom became excited or ruffled, her retiring and quiet disposition carrying
her though many tying crisises in her professional work with the utmost ease.
Considerable time was spent in the state capitol by Mrs. Solon, when she served as secretary of
the Railroad and Warehouse commission, of which W. H. Boys in Springfield, when the latter acted
as assistant attorney general, in the early part of 1900.
It was in May of this year that Mrs. Solon was compelled to relinquish her much loved work, and
seek the advice of specialists, regarding a malady with which she became afflicted. Continued
treatment brought little relief, and ten weeks ago, following the advice of a Chicago physician,
an operation was performed in St. Luke's hospital.
Hope was renewed in the hearts of those near and dear to her by her apparent improvement, only
to be replaced by grief, when it was realized that the disease was beyond the control of human
understanding. Mrs. Solon was a patient in the Chicago hospital for seven weeks, and three weeks
ago, at her request, was brought home.
Agnes Solon was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Ferguson, who were among Streator's pioneers.
She was born in Streator, February 27, 1881 and received her education in St. Mary's school.
Her father was the owner of a lime kiln at the corner of Broadway and Vermillion street, which
for many years was a land mark.
She was one of six children, four of whom, together with her parents, preceded her in death, and
are buried in an Ottawa cemetery. Only one brother, Edward Ferguson, of Chicago, together with
her husband, A. A. Solon of this city, are left.
Her marriage with Mr. Solon, a member of the firm of Solon Brothers, occurred in the Immaculate
Conception church in this city, November 8, 1908. There were no children.
Funeral services will be held from the Immaculate Conception church Friday morning at 9:30 o'clock,
preceded by a short prayer in the home at nine. Interment will take place in St. Mary's cemetery.
