STROKE PROVES FATAL TO MRS. SUSAN SOLON (Calvary Cemetery)
  A Paralytic stroke suffered yesterday at 2:30 p.m. in her home at 1038 Bauer Street proved
fatal to Mrs. Susan Solon, 62, Hammond resident for 25 years.
  Surviving are her husband, Joseph; sons, Duane, Bud, Paul and Jerome, all of Hammond;
daughters, Mrs. Clarence Volkman of Hammond, Mrs. H.A. Steele of Fairmont, W. Va., and 
Mrs. V. J. Lauerman of Fowler, Ind.; sisters, Mrs. H. V. Grant of Bloomington, Ind and 
Mrs. George L. Bigelow of Pontiac, Mich., and brother, J. H. Andrews of Gridley, ILL.
  Funeral services will be held Friday at 9 a.m. from All Saints' church in Hammond.  
The Rev. E. J. Mungovan will officiate and burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Gary.  
Short rites in the chapel at 5840 Hohman Avenue will be held at 8:30 a.m.

Michael SOLAN
  Michael Solan, 75, of 6743 Columbia avenue, Hammond, died Wednesday at his home.
He lived in the city for the last 39 years.  Solan was born in Schanoc, Austria.
  Survivors are his widow, Catherine; three daughters, Mrs. John Zelik of Dayton, O.,
Mrs. Mike Petroff of Hammond, and Mrs. Joseph Wolotka of Highland; six sons, Peter, John
and Michael of Hammond, Anthony of Lansing, Lt.Joseph E. of the US navy stationed at
Sea Side, Ore., and Pvt. Steven stationed in England; and three grandchildren.
  Funeral arrangements have not been completed.  The body is at the Czechanski funeral

  Funeral services for Joseph "Bud" Solon, 44, of 5630 Claude Av., Hammond, who died
in St. Margaret Hospital Friday night after being ill of pneumonia for a week, will
be held tomorrow morning.
  Brief services will be held in the Dalton Funeral Home at 8:30 o'clock and at
9 o'clock in All Saints Church with Msgr. Edward Mungovan officiating.  Burial will be
in Calvary Cemetery, Gary.
  Mr. Solon was a prominent Hammond sportsman.  In 1930-31 he sponsored the Solon
Athletic Club of Hammond and organized and directed the Solon Club basketball team,
composed of Fritz Thornton, Art Irwin, Bill Friedhoff, Gabe Overman, Dick Mettler,
Raus Purbaugh and "Curly" O'Connor.
  Surviving are the widow, Edna; two sons, James and Robert; a daughter, Lovell Donna;
his father, Joseph Solon of Calumet City; three brothers, Paul, Jerry and Duane, all
of Hammond, and three sisters, Mrs. Guy Stell of Detroit, Mrs. V. J. Lauerman of
Fowler, Ind., and Mrs. Clarence Volkman of Hammond.

  Mrs. Catherine Solan, of 6743 Columbia, Hammond, resident for 44 years and mother of a 
police officer and five well known businessmen, died Friday in St. Margaret Hospital. Her 
husband, the late Michael Solan, founded the Southeast Coal and Excavating firms now 
operated by two of the sons.
  Mrs. Solan, an active member of the Sisterhood of Our Lady of Perpetual Hope of St. 
Michael Ukranian church of Hammond, was a practicing advocate of good fellowship.
  Funeral services will be held at Wednesday at 9 a.m. in the residence and at 10 a.m. in 
the church with Rev. Paul Darmoe officiating.  Burial will be in Elmwood cemetery.  Remains 
may be viewed in the home after 5 p.m. Sunday.  The Czechanski funeral home, 248 155th Pl.,
Calumet City, is in charge of arrangements.
  Survivors are six sons, Michael, a traffic officer; Peter, floral shop owner; Steve, 
coal dealer; John, construction engineer; and Joseph, store owner; also three daughters, 
Mrs. Michael Petroff of Hammond, Mrs. Joseph Walotka, of Highland, and Mrs. John Zelic of

  Joseph Solon, 88, of 5927 Columbia Ave., Hammond, died this morning in St. Margaret 
Hospital. A resident of Hammond for 46 years, he was formerly employed by the Standard 
Oil Co.
  Funeral services will be held at 8:30 a.m. Monday at the Dalton Funeral Home, 
727 Carroll St., Hammond; and at 9 a.m. in All Saints Church, the Rev. Charles Seberger
officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home after 3 p.m. Saturday.  The rosary 
will be recited Sunday at 8 p.m.
  Solon is survived by the Widow, Mayme; three sons, Dwane and Edward J. of Hammond, 
and Paul H. of Kankakee, Ill.; three daughters, Mrs. Catherine Volkman of Schererville, 
Mrs. Evelyn Laureman of Fowler, Ind., and Mrs. Helen Gardener of Detroit, Mich.; nine

Mrs. Solon is survived by two sons, Robert and James, and one daughter, Lovell Solon,

  Paul H. Solon, 48, of 207 S. Elm St., Kankakee, Ill. formerly of Hammond, died
Saturday in Kankakee.  
  A lifelong resident of the Calumet Region, he was a member of the Calumet City Lions
Club.
  Services will be held 9 a.m. Wednesday at Burns Funeral Home, 5840 Hohman Ave.,
Hammond, and at 9:30 a.m. in St. Joseph Church with Msgr. Francis Jansen singing the

  Mrs. Solon is survived by his wife, Jane; one son, Dennis of Collinsville, Ill.;

  Duane Solon, age 81, of Highland, passed away Monday, Feb. 11, 1980 at the
Hammond-Whiting Convalescent Center.  Survivors: two sisters, Mrs. Evelyn Lauerman,
of Sarasota, FL; and Mrs. Catherine (Clarence) Volkman, of Boynton Beach, FL; one
brother, Edward J. (Mary) Solon, of Highland. 
  Funeral services will be held Thursday, at 9:30 from the Dalton & Son Funeral Home,
6955 Southeastern Ave., Hammond, and at 1o:00 at the Immaculate Conception Church,
East Chicago with the Reverend Joseph E. Pusateri officiating.  Burial 
Calvary Cemetery.
Friends may call at the chapel, Tuesday evening from 7-9 and Wednesday from 2-5, 7-9.
There will be a wake service at 7:00 Wednesday evening.
  Mr. Solon operated the Solon Tap Room on Sibley St. in downtown Hammond for many
years and later worked for a Mages Sporting Goods Store.

  Edward J. Solon, age 76, of Munster, passed away Monday, September 28, 1992.  He is
survived by wife, Mary; one son, Jack (Jean) Solon of Illinois; three daughters,
Susan Swick of Hammond, Diane (Tom) Hudler of Highland and Sharon (Hershal) Kohut of
California; one sister, Evelyn Laurman of Indiana; 12 granchildren and five great
grandchildren.
  Funeral services will be held Friday, October 2nd at 9:15 a.m. at the Kuiper Funeral
Home Chapel and a Mass of christian burial will be offered 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of
Perpetual Help Church with Rev. Charles Niblick officiating.  Cremation to follow.
Friends may meet with the family Thursday 2:00 to 5:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Kuiper
Funeral Home, 9039 Kleinman Rd. (2 blks south of Ridge Rd), Highland.
  Mr. Solon was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church of Hammond; retired from
Amoco with 40 years of Service and a veteran of the U.S. Army during World War II.

25, 1997.
Survived by one son, Jack (Jean) Solon of Wheeling, Illinois; three daughters,
Diane (Tom) Hubler of Highland, Sherry (Hersh) Kohut of California and Susan
Swick of Schererville; two sisters, Nellie Swanson of Highland and Barbara
(Bill) Boyd of California; 12 grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; and
several nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by her husband, Edward J. Solon,
in 1992.
  Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Sunday afternoon, September 28, 1997 at
Kuiper Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. James Milligan officiating. Cremation,
Calumet Park, Merrillville. Friends are invited to meet with the family Saturday
from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Kuiper Funeral Home Chapel, 9039 Kleinman Road (2 blocks

  Mrs. Solon was retired from Illinois Bell with 31 years of service and was a
member of the Pioneer Club at Illinois Bell. Memorials may be given to the

Josephine D. Solon  Dec. 20, 1915 - Jan. 6, 1999  
Josephine Downey Solon, 83, of 28947 Downey Street, Dowagiac, Mich., 
died of natural causes at midnight on Wednesday, Jan. 6, at Lee Memorial Hospital.  
Josephine was born in Dowagiac on Dec. 20, 1915, to Margaret (Ottolleran) and 
Andrew Downey. She graduated from Dowagiac High School and attended college 
for two years.  
On July 6, 1940, she married Joseph P. Solon, a former Chicago Police sergeant, 
in Dowagiac. He preceded her in death on Aug. 22, 1974. Josephine was also preceded in 
death by her parents, one brother and two sisters. Mrs. Solon was employed as a 
legal secretary in Chicago, Ill. She was a member of the Dowagiac Junior Arts Club and 
Sacred Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Dowagiac.  She is survived by a daughter, 
Colleen (Michael) Winter of Aurora, Ill.; three grandchildren, Michael Winter, 
Morna (Tim) Flanagan and Megan (Derek) Davis, all of Forrest Park, Ill.  Funeral 
services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 11,  in Sacred Heart of Mary Church. 
Father Leo Taubitz will officiate the service. Interment will be at Sacred Heart 
Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. on Sunday in the Groner Funeral Home, 
where a prayer service will be at 7 p.m.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made

  Joseph E. Solan, 82, of Munster, passed away on Sunday, February 18, 2001.  He is survived 
by his wife of sixty years, Irene (Hrycak); two sons: Joseph (Maureen) Solan, Jr. of St. John 
and David (Kim) Solan of Reno, NV; one daughter: Sara (Stephen) Powell of Australia; one twin 
brother, Anthony (late Mary) Solan of Munster; five grandchildren: Joseph (Vivian), Jason (Alison), 
Jered, Matthew, and Jamie; great grandchild, Sophia Mikayla; sisters-in-law, Antoinette Solan,

  Joseph was a member of St. Nicolas Byzantine Church. Retired Chief Appraiser for the Dept. of 
Housing and Urban Development in Chicago.  A retired Naval Commander, he served in WWII, Atlantic & 
Pacific Theatres and the Korean Conflict.  First Commanding Officer of U.S. Naval Reserve Training 
Center, Miller Beach.  Member and Past Commander of American Legion Post #16 and V.F.W. Post #2697.

Sister Patricia Clare (Mary Virginia) BEGGS 
  Sister Patricia Clare Beggs, 91 died at 9:50 p.m. Saturday, April 28, 2001, in Karcher 
Hall, St. Mary-of-the-Woods. The former Mary Virginia Beggs was born July 25, 1909, in 
Hammond to Thomas Beggs and Sarah Solon Beggs. Survivors include one sister, Patricia 
Clare Beggs Schmal of Fresno, Calif.; one brother, Thomas J. Beggs of Fresno; and 
several neices and nephews. She was preceded in death by one sister, Constance Beggs Beiriger. 
She entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Providence on Feb. 14, 1931, professed first 
vows Aug. 15, 1933, and final vows Jan. 23, 1939. She taught in schools staffed by the 
Sisters of Providence in Illinois, Maryland, California, Texas and Indiana, including 
St. Patrick's from 1938 to 1939. She received her bachelor's degree in English from 
St. Mary-of-the-Woods College and her master's degree in education from Indiana State University. 
Mass of Christian Burial is 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Church of the Immaculate Conception, with the 
Rev. Lawrence Richardt officiating. Burial is in the Cemetery of the Sisters of Providence. 
Wake is 3 p.m. today in Providence Hall, with wake services at 4:30 p.m. in the church.

  Mary A. Solon, 86, of Fort Wayne, a retired receptionist, died Saturday, Feb.,16, 2002, 
at University Park Nursing Home. 
  "Beloved grandaunt to Madison, Allison, Brittany and Bryce." The Fort Wayne native 
retired in 1983 from Wayne Pipe after 46 years of service. She was a member of St. Vincent 
de Paul Catholic Church.  Surviving are a sister, Margaret A. Monsson of Fort Wayne; and a 
neice Mary F. McMinn of Canton, Mich.  Services are 9:30 a.m. Friday at Catholic Cemetery 
Chapel, 3500 Lake Ave., with calling one hour before services.  Burial will be at Catholic Cemetery.

Anthony "Uncle Tony" Solan, age 84, of Munster, passed away on Tuesday, February 18, 2003.
He is survived by his cherished and caring neice, JoAnn Solan Mitchell; two sisters-in-law, 
Irene Solan of Munster and Antoinette Solan of Hammond; many other neices and nephews. 
Preceded in death by his wife , Mary, in 1997; parents, Michael and Catherine; brothers and 
sisters, Mary Zelik, Anna Petroff, Peter Solan, Antionette Wolotka, John Solan, Michael Solan, 
Joseph Solan, Sr. and Steve Solan.

Tony was Co-Founder and Proprieter of the Solan Funeral Home, Hammond.  An Indiana licensed 
funeral director and embalmer, graduate of Worsham College of Mortuary Science, member of 
Indiana Funeral Directors Association and Lake County Funeral Directors Association.  He was 
a member and usher of St. John Bosco Church, Abraham Lincoln Assembly 4th Degree Knights of 
Columbus, Certified Clock and Watchmaker and Greater Hammond Lions.

Antoinette Solan, age 87, of Hammond, passed away Thursday, April 10, 2003.  
She is survived by her daughter, Marie Antoinette (Dr. James Kolenich) of PA; 
son, Michael (Jean Farkas) Solan of Hammond; grandchildren: Michael F. Solan of 
Ohio, Timothy S. Solan of MN, James E (Barbara) and John M. Kolenich, all of Ohio, 
Peter D. and Thomas C. Kolenich both of PA and Paul A. Kolenich of MN; 
great-granddaughter Anastasia Kolenich; one brother, Walter (Gladys) Mshar of Highland;
three sister: Olga (late George) Adams of Hammond, Marie (Leonard) Stanislowski of 
Lansing, IL and Helen (John) Stefanich of Highland; many nieces and nephews; companion 
care givers: Uyanga Dash of Nongolia and Kelly Butler of Hammond.  She was preceded in 
death by her husband, Michael Solan, Sr. and son, John Steven Solan.

Funeral services Saturday, April 12, 2003, 10:00 A.M. at the Ukrainian Orthodox 
Pro-Cathedral of St. Michael, 7035 Columbia Ave., Hammond, with the Very Rev. Mitred 
Father Eugene S. Meschisen officiating.  Antoinette will lie in state at the church from 
9:30 A.M. till time of service.  At rest, Elmwood Cemetery, Hammond.  Friends may visit 
with the family on Friday from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Solan-Pruzin Funeral Home, 
7109 Calumet Ave., Hammond.  Parastas 2:30 P.M. at the funeral home.  Antoinette was a
