Solon, A. and wife passengers on Ship: Northerner Type: steamer From: Panama via way ports Arrived: January 1, 1852 Captain: H. Randall Passage: 14 days, 20 hours from Panama. Departed Panama at 11:00PM on December 16, 1851. Arrived Acapulco, Mexico at 8:00AM on December 23, left same day at 5:00PM. Arrived San Diego, California at 11:30PM on December 30, 1851. Stopped at Monterey, California and thence proceeded to San Francisco. Experienced heavy head winds and gales for three days after leaving St. Lucas but made run through inside of 15 days. Cargo: 111 packages of unidentified merchandise. |

Solan, Guiseppe passenger on Ship: Oregon Type: steamer From: Panama Arrived: November 20, 1852 Captain: LeRoy Passage: 16 days from Panama, via Taboga and Acapulco, Mexico. Left Panama at 11:50AM, and Taboga at 1:15PM, November 4, 1852. Experienced headwinds and adverse currents after leaving Bay of Panama. After crossing the Gulf of California, had very severe NW winds and sea. Arrived at Acapulco, Mexico on November 10, at 9:30PM and departed on November 11th at 2:00PM. On November 18th, at 5:00PM, spoke and exchanged papers with the "Golden Gate", bound to Panama. In loading the gun to salute the "Golden Gate", John A. Gibbs, of Somerset, Massachusetts, fourth mate of the "Oregon", was killed by its premature discharge. He was buried at sea the next morning. On November 18th, at 9:00PM, passed San Diego, California; raining very heavily, and thick weather, with every appearance of a severe gale from the SE; not deeming it advisable to wait for clear weather, passed San Diego without stopping. On board the "Oregon", as passengers, are Miss Catherine Hayes (Kate Hayes), the Irish soprano, her mother, and the other members of her party, Mr. Mengis and Mr. Harold. The "Oregon" brings to San Francisco the intelligence of the death of Daniel Webster, the American statesman. Cargo: U.S. Mail and $100,000 in treasure. |
