Master Bedroom Project

Sharing is caring!

Please note they say a picture is worth a thousand words, so please note that there are loads of photos on this page and it may be extremely slow to load if you have less than stellar internet speeds. So, on April 23, 2014, this happened in our master bedroom. Luckily we weren’t in bed at the time. We weren’t even home when it happened.

Oddly enough, the plaster that came down from the ceiling varied in thickness from 1/4 to 1 inch.

This was the view we had while lying in our bed for at least four months until we got the oldest moved out and could take over the smallest bedroom after his stuff was mostly moved out.

So, here is what it looked like once we had emptied it on September 24, 2014.

The closet has a wooden floor. The wall on the right side there is buckled and bulging, so my solution was to borrow my daughter’s large roll of white duct tape and make sure it stayed together until we could get around to fixing it right. Don’t laugh! It worked pretty well actually.

See the cute cat and mouse light switch cover that my mother-in-law left behind along with the paint and carpet colors? It is cute and may be used with the new room too.

Let’s just say progress on this room happened is small spurts that were few and far between. At last, we got started on the demolition around about July 14, 2015.

We got most of the ceiling plaster taken down.

Finally, after not much progress for way too long, we were offered a lifeline to pull us out of this perpetual lack of progress on the project.

The lifeline came in the form of a group of a dozen young workers between the ages of 18 and 30 who were in need of a service project to complete for their summer program. The date was set and they showed up at 9am on Saturday, July 7, 2018. They were young and enthusiastic and ready to work. Our son happens to be the leader of the group this summer and the group happens to be holding the program in our city this summer. We had quite a few tasks set out for them in case there were too many people to work safely in the bedroom. They did so many small tasks for us! What a great group of millennials!

You can see the white foam insulation in the outside walls. We also plan to insulate the ceiling and the inside walls just to help cut down on sound.

My mother-in-law had the drywall in the hall put up over the lathing strips as you can see in the photo above.

We plan to fill all the open cavities in the outside walls with expanding foam or other insulation to make them nice and snug against drafts.

This picture kind of blows my mind because that is my closet. It looks so strange with no walls. It always seemed like it was wider than it looks without the walls. Stuff was forever getting buried back in the back corner of the closet. It is just over 5 feet wide and not quite 3 feet deep.

I thought I should go ahead and let you see that we ARE making progress in the master bedroom, but it will obviously take a lot more work before we can move back into it. The fact that the door closes is the only thing that has kept it from making me completely crazy for the last four-plus years. Out of sight out of mind, right?

So, now I need to think about things like whether I want to build drawers into my closet or if I want more than one clothes rod and which direction I want the rod or rods to go. I also need to figure out what color to paint the room. Maybe research on paint colors and how they affect mood and sleep would also be in order.

If you’ve been through a major room remodel like this one, how did you get through it? What hints can you share with me? Any color ideas? I was thinking a light blue paint so we could reuse our navy blue sheets and blankets, and maybe even keep the flowered valences for the windows. I am really over the mauve-pink color that was the walls and carpet for as long as I can remember, but I still like the curtains. Hubby pointed out that the other three bedrooms already have light blue paint on the walls and so does the hallway both upstairs and down. I still like the color, but he reminded me of the little house that had all the walls painted some shade of green and even had green carpet. Yes, that was too much green, especially in such a little house, but this is different, this is blue we are talking about. Can there ever be too much blue?

If you have suggestions on paint colors or have already done research that you would like to share with me, please send an email, leave a comment or use the contact form to share them with me. I would really appreciate it! Stay tuned for updates, because life is never dull when you live in a house built in the 1920s!
