Crowd (Five Minute Friday)

The word for this past Friday was “crowd”. When I think of that word, I see large groups of people in my mind. But as I thought about the word over the last few days that seemed too easy, too predictable.

Other things can be crowded too. Your clothing can be crowded when you’ve put on a few pounds. Your schedule can be overcrowded when you say yes to all the things even the ones you don’t really want to do. Your mind can be crowded with thoughts, especially things you are trying to remember and should really write down. Your home can get crowded if you have lots of people or possessions living there with you.

So many things can crowd you. I like my space. I think that if you put a child’s hula-hoop on the floor and stepped into the middle of it, that is about how much personal space I feel comfortable having around me. More is fine, but less is either awkward or downright uncomfortable unless it is a member of my immediate family.

Ever have one of those nights when you are falling on your face with exhaustion and then you go to bed and can’t sleep because your brain won’t let you. There are too many things bouncing around and crowding out the calm needed to relax and go to sleep? Not all crowds involve people, no matter what image flashes in your brain when you see or hear the word.

Saving Money on Food While Traveling

Last month, we went to an intense 3-day workshop in Atlanta that we knew would have long hours. We were also trying to continue eating reasonably healthy and trying to save money at the same time. So what did we do you ask?

Breakfast

Well, before we left home we were drinking green smoothies every morning for breakfast anyway, so I just made a few extra batches of smoothies and put each serving into a quart-sized zip-top freezer bag and put them into the freezer flat to freeze with the name of the smoothie and calories on the label. These did a dual purpose because they also acted as ice packs in the cooler on our way to Atlanta. They were only partially thawed, so when we got to our room, I left the next day’s smoothie in the refrigerator and put the rest in the freezer. Each morning we added a straw and drank our smoothie then pulled the ones for the next day out so they could thaw. That is how we dealt with breakfast, and it worked out very well.

Lunch

Lunch was not much harder. We use a lot of the Ole Xtreme Wellness High-Fiber Low-Carb Wraps in place of bread in our house, so we threw a pack of those in along with cheese sticks and sliced turkey lunchmeat for wraps. We tossed in the avocado we had in the refrig so we could use it up. We also prewashed and bagged baby carrots, cherries, and pretzels in individual servings. This meant each morning all we had to do to pack our lunches was make our sandwich/wrap and bag it, then grab the additional things we wanted to have to round out our lunch that day. We also had a small selection of Clif Bars and some prebagged Orchard Valley Harvest Snack Packs Trail Mix. We had a couple of single serving sized bottles that we could fill with our own water or iced tea each morning to add to our lunch bag. Everything fit nicely in my Thirty-One Lunch Break Thermal bag and was enough to feed both of us.

This particular event offered lunch tickets for $20 a person to go through a buffet and fill a styrofoam carryout container to bring back and eat in the meeting room. Nobody really wanted to drive somewhere to get fast food because once you were parked you didn’t want to have to give up your parking space for the day as they really had a shortage of parking at this particular event center. Needless to say, Hubby and I were thrilled that we had been cheap and planned to pack our lunches and thus avoided the additional $120 it would have cost us to eat that buffet lunch for the three days of the conference. I’m not going to even pretend we didn’t think of that as a huge win! Continue reading

Rain (Five Minute Friday)

Rain is the word for this Five Minute Friday and what an appropriate word it is. I was battling with it less than twenty-four hours ago.

These days, because I am in the boot, I have to take a little extra time to do the simplest things like run errands. You see, the boot is on my right foot this time because my Achilles Tendon is acting up. Why is that a problem? Well, because I need to use my right foot to press the gas pedal when I drive. Yep, you guessed it, I have to take the boot off to drive and put on my shoe, then before I can get out of the car to do whatever I need to do, I get to reverse the process and put on the boot. Now, this is not so bad on a nice day, but what about the days when it rains? I usually have both legs outside the car while switching into and out of the boot because it is a BIG boot and there is not enough room to maneuver it on the driver’s side of the car with the pedals and steering wheel taking up space.

I was out and about getting things done that couldn’t be put off. So anyway, it looked like rain while I was out and I hurried back to the car, had barely gotten the boot off and settled into the passenger side floorboard,  my shoe on so I could drive, started the car and got about half a mile down the road when the skies opened up and it really let loose. I mean it rained so hard I could barely see well enough to drive and it kept up most of the way home. God was looking out for me though because when I got a few blocks from home, the rain eased up to barely a sprinkle.

I am supposed to be wearing the big, knee-high boot whenever I am standing or walking unless I am sleeping, showering or driving, per podiatrist’s orders. No, I don’t put it on if I get out of bed in the middle of the night to use the restroom. Usually, when I am leaving the house and driving myself somewhere, I carry the boot out to the car in the tote bag I use just for that purpose. This seems to be working pretty well and I AM wearing it about 90% of the time when I am not sleeping, showering or driving. I really Am trying my best to do what I am supposed to so it will get better sooner rather than later. I just wish there was an easier and faster way to get in and out of that boot when hanging half out of the car to do so isn’t practical like when it rains. I can only imagine how much fun it will be in the ice and snow of winter, which is another reason I am trying to behave and follow the doctor’s orders.

Ideally, if it is raining I either try to put off going out in it or try to talk hubby into driving me if that is an option. But there will surely be times when it can’t be avoided and I am not looking forward to those times. If you have any suggestions on how to handle this, please let me know.

Crochet Hat Goal Met!

I set the goal at the beginning of the year to crochet 36 hats to give away to charity. I met that goal on 8/28/2018 and thought I would share a bit about how setting goals and tracking them has revolutionized my productivity.

Actually, maybe I am just as productive as I ever was, but tracking my goals has made me realize just how much I am capable of accomplishing when I set my mind to it. When I don’t set a goal or track my progress toward a goal, I lose track of just how much I have done and so I am always feeling like I don’t get anything done.

Sometimes when it comes to crocheting the hats I make for donations to charity, all it takes is an idea for a new color scheme or yarn combination and then I want to at least start it so I can see how cool it will look. I hate having more than a couple of things started at once so I try to start and finish the hats during each of my monthly two-hour long crochet/knit group meetings. The knitters are always amazed at how quickly I can turn out a finished hat because apparently knitting takes much longer.

I won’t bore you with all the hats, but here are a select few for you to see how the same basic hat pattern can be infinitely different because of the combinations of yarns I choose to make them with.

Flat and tall on the head.
Folded with extra warmth for ears.

This was a fun experiment with the boa yarn someone was giving away. I paired it with basic black and had to go by feel to hit the stitches, but it turned out amazing. The black and navy combo of the boa yarn was a nice choice.
These were made with thick chunky yarns and trimmed with a variegated yarn. Note how the bands look different when paired with different colors on the top. The band yarn is the same.
Made these using up small balls of variegated yarn paired with a solid, then adding another solid when the ball ran out.
These are made with a light aqua and a peach colored yarn paired with a basic heather gray yarn.
First hat on the right. Second hat on the left. The blue ran out so I finished with gray giving this banded effect.

Not only have I crocheted the 36 hats this year, but I also made  5 small fleece blankets edged with crochet to donate to charity. Then there are the dozen or so soap sacks I made to give to the homeless with new bars of soap in them.

So have you met any of the goals you set for 2018? How do you make sure you meet or exceed the goals? Let us know how you are setting and achieving goals in the comments below.

If you want to support my efforts to crochet or just want to own one of my hats, check the selection available for sale on my Etsy Shop. If you have leftover acrylic yarn and want to have me make it into hats to donate, contact me to make arrangements to send me your leftover yarn stash and I will get right on it!

Happy yarning!

Rush (Five Minute Friday)

Rush is the prompt word for this week and though every week I promise myself I will get back to writing to the prompt on Thursday night or Friday at the latest, it seems I am always in a rush trying to get the most done in the least amount of time. So here we are at Thursday again, nothing like a little procrastination to light a fire under this writer!

Usually, when I don’t get things written, it is because I haven’t settled my mind yet on what I want to say, but this word seemed easy so that wasn’t the issue this week. Life is just busy sometimes because others make it busy, but mostly I have only myself to blame. I feel like I have too many irons in the fire these days. Too many books I want to read, podcasts or audiobooks I want to listen to and even movies on NetFlix I want to watch. It is overwhelming and just when I think I have settled on what needs to happen next, something throws a monkey wrench into the whole works and I find myself playing catchup.

So my goal for this week is to slow down and make a list of the top three things I want or need to accomplish each day. If I can get the three things on the list done, I will give myself permission to let everything else go for the rest of that day. Now I may make a huge list of everything just so I don’t forget anything, but I will go through before bed or when I start the day and choose the top three. I will also attempt, yet again, to write the Five Minute Friday prompt by midnight on Friday, but no promises!
