Saving for Big-Ticket Items

When you need to save for a big-ticket item, like a trip to London, or a really cool new camera, or something equally cool that you wouldn’t normally get a loan for like a new car, how do you save the money for it? I do all sorts of things, whatever it takes really, if the goal is truly important to me, so I will share some ideas below.

The very first thing I would do is to set up a separate account to put the money into so you can be motivated by the act of saving and watching the account balance grow. Once you’ve done that, try any or all of these ideas to help you meet your goal.

  • Save all pocket change, roll, and deposit. I saved pennies in one 16.9 oz Ice Mountain water bottle and nickels and dimes in another. I am told if you fill one with just dimes, it will hold about $100. We deposited over $130 in rolled coins to start our account this way, though admittedly, it was mostly quarters and we had been saving them a long time.
  • Choose NOT to do something, then transfer the money you would have spent on the thing you chose NOT to do, into the account for the big-ticket item. In our case, this was going to a cabin in a state park over New Year’s weekend.
  • Cook at home instead of eating out. Watch your food budget get lower and save the difference. Note that you pay extra for convenience foods, so make as much from scratch as you can, or buy extra to stock up when you find a good sale price on something you use.
  • If you really want to eat out, use a 2 for 1 coupon and save the difference, or if you are eating out alone get the second meal to take for lunch or eat for dinner later in the week.
  • Make your own iced tea, coffee, hot tea or whatever your beverage of choice is. Save the money you would have spent and put it into the big ticket account.
  • Give up paying for drinks if and when you go out to eat. We all need to drink more water. This can save anywhere from a dollar to several dollars per person, and let’s not even think about buying alcohol out, get it from the liquor store and drink at home you will save so much this way.
  • Save all overtime pay or freelancing money in the big-ticket account.
  • If you pay off a debt, take the amount you used to pay toward that debt and save it for the big ticket item or pay that amount extra toward the next debt so it gets paid off earlier and when the debts are paid, ALL the money formerly used to pay these debts can go toward the big-ticket item. Dave Ramsey calls this the debt snowball.

Regret (Five Minute Friday)

regret

Regret, Kate says. What am I going to write about that? I thought late Thursday night as I was getting ready for bed. I’m sure something will come to me before the weekend is over.

Well, little did I know my own carelessness and stupidity would give me something to regret and thus write about just twelve hours later. Be careful what you wish for (or think in this case), right? So I boiled water in the electric teapot for some hot tea on Friday, then as per my habit, I went to unplug the teapot while it wasn’t in use. Silly me didn’t consider the steam coming out of the spout or move the teapot out of the way first. I reached over to grab the plug from the wall and the steam got me before I could figure out what I had done wrong. I didn’t touch the teapot at all, this damage was all done by steam alone. It hurt, so I jerked my right arm back and put my left hand over the sore spot to comfort it. When I moved that hand, there was loose skin, so maybe it was blistering and I didn’t even know it yet. It seemed pretty mild, just looking at it, but boy did it hurt! By the time I was done running errands Friday evening it occurred to me that this burn might prevent me from wearing my splint for carpal tunnel and thus keep me from sleeping soundly. I had picked up some three-inch by four-inch bandages during my errands and planned to cover it while I slept. As it turned out, that was a good plan and the splint covered up the bandage keeping it secure all night while the bandage allowed me to wear my splint. Win-win situation. I made it through the night in good shape.

As the day went by Saturday, water/fluid collected under the top layer of skin and it began to hurt again. No worries, I thought. I have a plan for tonight, just like I did last night. At some point, I realized there was fluid on my arm and that my blister was leaking so I grabbed a piece of paper towel to catch the draining fluid and was glad to see it was clear, which is a good sign. Guess I won’t have to worry about it being too big to fit in my splint tonight. I had been wondering if it would still work with so much fluid inside the blister. I have been lucky. It has only been a minor inconvenience, really. I know it could have been so much worse. I don’t regret making the tea, but I do regret not pouring the water before I tried to unplug the teapot. Ok, Lord, lesson learned. Thanks for not making it any worse than it was. Thanks also for the inspiration for this post.

This post is part of the weekly Five Minute Friday link-up!
The prompt this week is: Regret
The assignment: Write for five minutes on the word of the week. This is meant to be a free write, which means: no editing, no over-thinking, no worrying about perfect grammar or punctuation. Just write.

OUCH!

Book Review: Holding the Fort

I was very excited to be able to read and review this book. It arrived in my mailbox in good shape but I was disappointed to realize someone had previously opened the package. How did I know? It came open way too easy for one of those rubber cement sealed bubble wrap envelopes. The book was in good shape and will make a great addition to my library.

I enjoyed reading this story. To me, it was a great story about taking control of your life and grabbing for the second chance when it was offered. It is also about overcoming stereotypes and a bad reputation to go on to new things no one would have thought possible of you. The historical wrapper in which this story was told is great too. It is always wonderful to be transported back in time and try to imagine how you would fair in the same situation. If you are looking for a great book to read, I highly recommend you grab this one.

Being as this is the first book in The Fort Reno Series, now the question becomes, when will the next book be released?

If you are interested in buying this book, please consider using the affiliate link below. It won’t cost you more and I might make a few cents because you did.

Holding the Fort (The Fort Reno Series)

I was sent this book by the publisher to review.
I will always give honest reviews on my blog.
My opinion cannot be bought.

(This book arrived in my mailbox Monday, 12/11/17)

Beauty (Five Minute Friday)

I have never considered myself beautiful before. No one ever told me I was, in fact, it was quite the opposite in middle school (bullying boys!). In spite of how I view myself, I have always considered my kids much better looking than either their father or I.

Maybe beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but I have always considered my daughter beautiful. She doesn’t think she is, but she has this beauty that shines through because she is really a beautiful person from the inside out. When I heard the song, “What Makes You Beautiful”, by One Direction it just seemed like they were talking about my beautiful daughter. Not that I ever want her to think so highly of herself and her beauty that she gets a big head, but someday I hope she realizes the fact that she is a wonderfully made child of God. She sees all the blemishes and that she has curves and so many curls, but those things all work together in her favor. It is the whole package, she is more than the sum of her parts. My prayer for her is that someday she will be still and realize that she needs God in her life. Maybe after she surrenders to Him, she will be able to see the woman we see when we look at her.

For those who may not be familiar with the song, please see the lyrics and video included below. As for me, I will always think of this as Robin’s song. Always know that you ARE beautiful and you ARE loved. Continue reading

On the Way to Confidence

The year is more than six weeks gone and I am asking myself how my one word for the year is going. For those who are new to this site, this year I chose the word CONFIDENCE to guide me through this year. I don’t really feel like I exude confidence yet or anything. Maybe I never will. I don’t think of myself when I hear the word confident, it just isn’t who I am. But I am working on changing that, one step at a time. So since I have let six weeks of the year slip by, I am asking myself if I am doing things to make myself more confident and if so, what are they and how did they work.

I have read several books about gaining confidence this year. While I’m not sure any of them has exactly helped to boost my self-confidence, they have helped me to understand that having too much confidence can also be a bad thing.
So, let’s cut to the chase and talk about things I have done this year to show that I have confidence in myself, especially as a writer. Continue reading
