Sam Solon
Sam Solon, who never forgot his Greek heritage or the city he grew up in and loved, passed away
Friday, Dec. 28, 2001.
Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday with a 6:30 p.m. Trisagion at the DECC
Auditorium, where services will be at 11:30 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Sam Solon Scholarship, c/o UMD, would be appreciated.
Arrangements are being conducted by the Dougherty Funeral Home.
Helping people was Sams passion in life and his legacy. Born June 25, 1931, during the
Depression to poor immigrant parents, Sam knew what it was like to live during harsh and uncertain
times and devoted the rest of his life to giving his family, friends and neighbors a better future.
He helped support his family by selling newspapers in downtown Duluth and working on the ore docks,
at the Coolerator plant in West Duluth and the U.S. Steel Plant in Morgan Park. Soon after
graduating from Central High School in 1949, Sam was drafted and served in the U.S. Army in Germany
from 1952 to 1954. Returning to Duluth, he earned a teaching degree at the University of
Minnesota-Duluth, and in 1958 became a social studies teacher at Stowe Junior High School and later
at Morgan Park High School.
In 1970, Sam ran successfully for state representative and in 1972 was elected state senator
representing Duluth. For over 30 years, the persistence, patience and skill he displayed as a
streetside newspaper hawker, student, soldier and teacher made Sam one of the most influential and
respected members of the Minnesota Legislature and a tireless advocate for the people of Duluth. He
was instrumental in the expansion of UMD, the Duluth Entertainment and Convention Center and the
I-35 project, as well as being a key supporter of the Lake Superior Zoo, the Depot and the
Northwest Airlines maintenance base. His legendary fairness made it possible to pass important
projects in a sometimes contentious and partisan Legislature. Democrats and Republicans alike
could rely on Sam.
His many accomplishments and contributions didnt end at the State Capitol. He was a member of
the YMCA, American Legion, VFW, Elks, Moose Lodge, Rotary Club No. 25, Minnesota Federation of
Teachers and Minnesota Education Alliance, as well as numerous boards. He served as chapter
president and district governor of the American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association and
was a member since 1956. Sams busy schedule never kept him from being an active and leading member
of the Twelve Holy Apostles Greek Orthodox Church of Duluth, where he was choir director, chanter
and parish councilor. May his memory be eternal.
Sam is survived by his wife, Yvonne (Kamp) Prettner Solon; mother, Dimitra Solon, both of Duluth;
four children, Jon Solon and his wife, Janet, of Chelan, Wash., Chris Solon of Duluth, Dina Webb
and her husband, Mark, of Duluth, and Vicki Smoyer and her husband, Robert, of Maplewood; two
stepchildren, Shelley Radelat and her fiance, Terry Pulling, of Duluth, and Matthew Prettner of
Eden Prairie; four grandchildren, Stephen Webb and Robby and Matthew Smoyer, and Justin Radelat;
three brothers, Louis Solon of Deerfield Beach, Fla., Chris and Vlasie Solon of Duluth; one sister,
Bessie Solon of Duluth; two nephews, Jerry Solon and Erik Ekstrom; and four nieces, Sara Solon,
Kristina Solon-Boe and her husband, David, Robin Kling and Kristen Ritchie.
He was preceded in death by his father, Nicholas Solon; one son, Nicholas; and his first wife and
mother of his children, Carole Solon Schwanz. (Submitted by Merril Bourne)

Sam Solon, 70, of Duluth passed away Friday, Dec. 28, 2001.

LONGTIME LAWMAKER DIES AT 70//STATE SEN. SAM SOLON RECALLED AS QUIET, EFFECTIVE
Minnesota State Sen. Sam Solon, a quiet and beloved lawmaker who represented west Duluth in the
state Legislature for more than three decades, died Friday at St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth.
The 70-year-old lawmaker succumbed to the liver cancer he had been fighting since January. The son
of Greek immigrants who settled in Duluth's Central Hillside, Solon was among the city's most
popular politicians, winning re-election by wide margins. The soft-spoken Solon seemed to know just
about everyone in Duluth by name and used the popularity to easily overcome political opponents as
well as the battle over illegal use of his Senate long-distance telephone privileges in 1993.
Solon, a DFLer called simply "Senator Sam" by many friends and colleagues in and out of politics,
was known at the Capitol more for his dogged efforts to promote Duluth economic development than
for impassioned speeches or personal causes. "That was his cachet. The classic Greeks like Sam are
generally thinkers. Hard workers. But not overtly emotional," said U.S. Rep. Jim Oberstar, a
longtime friend of Solon's. "For Sam, it was 'can the speeches, let's build relationships.' And he
became a tremendously successful legislator for it." A moderate Democrat who sided with
pro-business Republicans as often as the liberal wing of his own party, Solon was instrumental in
pressing key legislation for Duluth and Northeastern Minnesota -- especially projects at the
University of Minnesota Duluth and Northwest Airlines facilities in Duluth and Chisholm. Solon
continued to serve this year but missed much of the 2001 legislative session during his cancer
treatments. He had hoped to battle the disease into remission so he could finish his term through
2002. His condition deteriorated rapidly in recent days, however, and he finally slipped into a
coma this week. Solon was elected to the House in 1970, his first effort in politics. He served two
years in the House, then ran for the Senate when a seat opened due to redistricting. He served 29
years in the Senate and never faced a close election. He was the Senate's second most senior
member, a politician who preferred behind-the-scenes deal-brokering over fiery speeches. A
moderate, Solon had support from both labor unions and business groups. He served for a decade as
the chairman of the Senate Commerce Committee that oversaw state laws regarding business, banking
and consumer protection. He helped broker critical deals on state issues such as workers'
compensation reform, medical insurance and HMOs and professional sports facilities. Rep. Greg
Davids, R-Preston, chaired the House Commerce Committee and often worked opposite Solon. "We lost a
true gentleman," Davids said. "I really loved Sam Solon.'' "Sam had an amazing ability to bring
people together. He made everyone feel that they had a role in the process. He had extremely good
skills as a legislator," said Senate Majority Leader Roger Moe, a longtime friend and DFL ally.
Oberstar noted that Solon's relationship with key lawmakers and businessmen helped seal the 1991
deal that saw Northwest Airlines build a maintenance base in Duluth and reservation center in
Chisholm in exchange for timely state loans to the airline. The deal is credited with keeping
Northwest afloat as it teetered on bankruptcy and with creating hundreds of jobs in Northeastern
Minnesota. Born in Duluth's Central Hillside neighborhood in 1931, Solon grew up in a family of
Greek immigrants. His parents, Nick and Dimitra Eliopoulos, changed their name to Solon, which
means "legislator" or "senator" in Greek. Solon went through a public battle with alcohol abuse,
including a drunken-driving arrest. But he continued to win his political races by wide margins,
even after a 1995 fraud conviction in connection with the Legislature's Phonegate scandal in 1993.
Solon gave his ex-wife and others his Senate telephone code, which they used to make long-distance
calls at taxpayers' expense. During the three years the Phonegate scandal dragged on, Solon repaid
almost $5,000 in phone charges, apologized on the Senate floor, was formally reprimanded by the
Senate Ethics Committee and lost his committee chairmanship for almost a year. A wake has been
scheduled for Friday at the Duluth Entertainment Convention Center. A funeral will be Saturday in
the DECC Auditorium with a reception following in the Lake Superior Ballroom, Duluth Mayor Gary
Doty said Friday. News Tribune staff writer Martiga Lohn contributed to this story.

ATTORNEY ART SOLON MADE TIME FOR HIS CHILDREN
Albuquerque attorney Art Solon had planned for months "a special trip" to Jamaica with his
children, a co-worker said Friday.
But their vacation ended suddenly on Monday. Solon, 50, drowned in the ocean off Jamaica.
Friends and family described Solon as a strong swimmer who was tall, slender and as physically fit
as someone half his age.
Brett Solon, his former wife, said Solon was bodysurfing with some other people when he apparently
was caught in a "really heavy" undertow. There was no warning sign on the beach about the dangerous
area, she said.
"He spent a lot of time in the ocean," Brett said. "He loved it It just was more than he could handle."
She said two of his brothers are bringing his body back from Jamaica this weekend.
A visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at French Mortuary, 1111 University NE. The
funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church, 4020 Lomas NE.
Brett Solon said their children, Mike, 16, and Blair, 13, witnessed the accident. She went to
Jamaica and returned with Blair, but Mike wanted to stay with his uncles.
"They're OK," she said of her children. "It's a lot for a child to go through."
Solon was a senior associate with the Branch Law Firm, starting in 1992. He specialized in personal
injury, wrongful death and product liability, especially automotive and pharmaceutical cases.
Turner Branch, senior partner, said the tragedy has devastated the firm.
"He was like a son to me," Branch said of Solon, whom he described as a person noted for his
straightforwardness and humor. "He was a great prankster."
Branch recalled how while they were selecting a jury, Solon told him key evidence was missing.
Solon only admitted the prank after Branch anguished for a few hours.
"I got to appreciate his sense of humor," Branch said. "He'll be greatly missed."
Shariesse McCannon, Solon's legal assistant, said he was an excellent trial lawyer who always was
prepared and extremely focused.
"As soon as I heard of his passing, I called about six of his clients," she said. "He was part of
their family. He would invite clients to his home for dinner, and they would remain friends long
after the case had been resolved. His clients were devastated."
McCannon said Solon always put his children ahead of anything else in his life. She said he would
make time during his busy legal schedule, to be at their games or just to be available to them.
Solon also enjoyed his Alaskan malamute, Jingles, University of Notre Dame football, remodeling
homes and swimming. His home has a lap pool, she said.
"That last Friday in the office he was so happy," McCannon said. "He was the happiest we'd seen
him. It was absolutely a very special trip."
Brett Solon recalled how he would come home for lunch when their children were young to be with them.
"I think that mostly his life has been about his kids," she said. "That was the main force in his
life. "He was an incredible father."
Solon's father, Pat, died several years ago.
Survivors include his mother, Joan, of Colorado Springs, Colo,; brothers, Paul of San Francisco,
Jim of Pasadena, Calif., and Dave of Colorado Springs; and sisters, Susan of Pueblo, Colo., Katie
of Vienna, Austria, and Mary Jo of Las Cruces.

SISTER MARGARET SOLON Teacher at Ursuline Academy
Funeral services for Sister Margaret Solon, an Ursuline teacher who initiated the Dallas academy's
counseling department, will be at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Monica Catholic Church, 9933 Midway Road in
Dallas. Sister Solon, 88, died Friday at the Ursuline Convent. She was reared in Dallas and
attended Ursuline Academy. In 1932, she left her family to become a nun. She taught in Missouri and
Galveston before serving in Dallas. From 1962 to 1975, she taught and established the academic- and
career-counseling department at the academy, said Sister Virginia Killam of Ursuline Academy. "She
could get people excited and willing to do anything," Sister Killam said. Sister Solon was
appointed to serve as principal of the Ursuline Academy in San Antonio grade school. She became the
superior of the San Antonio convent from 1975 to 1982, Sister Killam said. Always wanting to be
active, Sister Solon returned to Dallas, where she continued to initiate programs promoting
religious and/or academic advancement. She began home retreats, a night group that taught people
different forms of prayer. She led the Ursuline Associates, a spiritual character-forming group.
She began "Teresians" - the forerunner to the diocesan vocation guild - to encourage people to
pursue religious vocations. Of special interest to Sister Solon was helping people become literate.
"That was her personal joy - to teach reading," Sister Killam said. Sister Solon received her
bachelor's degree in English from Incarnate Word, a master's degree in school administration from
Catholic University of America and another master's degree in counseling from the University of
North Texas. "She has been a counselor and spiritual adviser to many, many women here," Sister
Killam said. Memorials may be made to Ursuline Sisters Retirement Fund, 9905 Inwood Road, Dallas,

JOHN FRANCIS SOLON, 72, HAD TASTE FOR ADVENTURE, TALENT FOR INSURANCE
All the policies in the world probably wouldn't have covered insurance broker John Francis Solon
as he jumped into that bullring in Spain. In their motel room that morning, Mr. Solon had told his
wife, Olite, he was wearing his bullfighting clothes that day. She thought he was just joking until
he later climbed over the fence for a quick lesson in bullfighting at the farm they were visiting.
So, with shaking hands, Olite Standley Solon snapped some pictures to record the unusual event.
Their 1970 Christmas card featured the daring insurance broker on yet another holiday adventure,
his widow said with a laugh.
Mr. Solon, 72, died at his Seattle home last Friday of cancer.
He had retired last December after 50 years in the insurance business because of illness, but
continued as a consultant until his voice failed him. "He finally had to call up his office and
whispered, 'I can't do it anymore,' " said his daughter, Patricia Solon. "He had wanted to work
until he was 85 years old."
At his retirement, Mr. Solon's five decades in the insurance industry won praise from Dick
Marquardt, Washington state insurance commissioner. "I can think of no single person in the
insurance industry who has earned the respect of his peers and of our office more than John Solon,"
Marquardt said. "His ability to understand the intricacies of insurance coverages and his concern
for his customers has earned for him the title of 'Mr. Insurance'."
Mr. Solon was born in Mill Valley, Calif., graduating from the University of California at Berkeley
in 1941 with a bachelor's degree in mathematics. He met his wife there when they both participated
in theater productions.
He began his career as a fire-insurance underwriter in San Francisco. In 1946, the Solons moved to
Mercer Island, where Mr. Solon worked for insurance companies based in Oregon and Washington.
In 1955, he joined LaBow Haynes Co. Inc., a company that merged with Sedgwick James in 1990. His
specialty was commercial property insurance; he retired as senior vice president at Sedgwick James.
He also was a technical editor for Pacific Northwest Underwriter and wrote a column for Insurance
Week under the pen names "Day Lee" and then "Lee's Lip." Both were puns based on names used for
insurance reports.
Mr. Solon taught evening classes at Edison Technical School (now Seattle Central Community College)
and was a charter member of the Pacific Northwest Chapter of the Society of Chartered Property and
Casualty Underwriters.
He served as president of that organization, and also as president of the Independent Insurance
Agents of King County. He was vice chairman and chairman of the Far West Agents Conference and
worked on the Risk Retention Committee of the Independent Insurance Agents of America.
Mr. Solon's trademark was a bow tie, which he wore exclusively after the early 1950s. Olite Solon
remembers that when her husband was inaugurated as president of the insurance agents' association,
his fellow agents - including the women - wore bow ties to the formal dinner to honor him. "John
got up to make his speech and did a double-take at all the bow ties," said Mrs. Solon. "He took his
bow tie, pulled the knot apart and then retied it, daring the others with, 'Let's see you do that.' "
Mr. Solon was active with St. Joseph parish, Holy Names Academy, the Archdiocese of Seattle and the
Holy Name Society. He worked with the Capitol Hill Community Council and was an active supporter of
Seattle Opera, Seattle Youth Symphony, Seattle Repertory Theater, A Contemporary Theater and
Intiman Theater.
Besides his wife of 51 years, Mr. Solon is survived by a son, Michael of Vallejo, Calif.; daughters
Patricia of Seattle, Jeanne Oliphant Anshutz of Mountlake Terrace, and Mary (Migs) Nelson of
Kittitas, Kittitas County; sister Suzanne Irvine of Corte Madera, Calif., and five grandchildren.
He also was foster father to Gary Hess of Seattle and Candace Hess Bustanoby of Bellevue, and
"grandpa" to the three Bustanoby children.
A vigil Mass was celebrated yesterday.

Death of Mrs. Solon - Another Pioneer Settler of Shields Called to Her Reward
Last Thursday evening Aug. 24 (1906), the sad announcement of the death of Mrs. Martin Solon,
of the town of Shields, was telephoned to her relatives and friends of this city. While it was
known that she was suffering from a painful injury received by a fall Aug. 14th, no one here
thought that she was in danger of death, and the news, therefore, was both startling and distressing.
On Aug. 14th, while visiting her sisters at Richwood, Mrs. Solon, in passing out through the
back door slipped upon the step and was very seriously, and as it now appears, fatally injured.
Help was summoned and she was carried in and placed upon the bed. Dr. Shinnick of Watertown was
telephoned for and promptly responded. He reported severe injuries on the hip and side but found
no bones broken. For several days her pain was so intense that no one could touch her. At the end
of a week, there were some indications of improvement and she was beginning to plan her removal
to her home, four miles north of Richwood. Her daughter, Mary who was summoned as soon as her
mother was hurt, and was constantly with her, as was also her sisters, and at times, other members
of her family. At times, she was subject to fainting spells, supposed to be brought on from the
effect of the pain she constantly suffered. The application of a face bath promptly revived her
from the fainting spells, which were not considered dangerous.
About 11 o'clock Thursday, Aug. 24th and just about 10 days after she was injured, she sank into
a fainting spell, from which her daughter was unable to revive her and without a word, without a
groan, without a struggle, she passed away into that land were(where)pains and sorrows are unknown.
Her remains were taken to her home Thursday evening and her funeral was held from St. Joseph's
church in Richwood, Sunday, Aug. 27th, at 10 o'clock A.M. She was buried in the family lot in
St. Bernard's cemetery, Watertown beside the grave of her good husband who passed from earth
almost six years ago.
Deceased whose maiden name was Catherine Kelley was born in County Galway, Leland, about the
year 1835 and came to this country with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Martin Kelley in 1847, the family
settling in Oneida Co. New York. In 1853 they came to Wisconsin and located in Shields. Two years
later, the subject of this sketch became the wife of Martin Solon and they began farming on 80
acres of land in the northern part of that town. By industry and good management the farm was
enlarged until it reached 510 acres. Mr. Solon whose name was a synonym for honesty, kindness and
charity was called to his final home October 21, 1899.
This happy union was blessed with a family of eight children five sons and three daughters, all
of whom were present at the funeral of their mother last Sunday. They are Martin Solon of
Claremont, Minn., John T. Solon of Watertown, Patrick and James who reside upon the family
homestead; Peter Solon, who owns and resides on what is known as the David Barry farm in Shields,
the Misses Mary and Kate Solon, also at home and Winifred (Mrs. Abe McCarty) of Claremont, Minn.
Deceased is also survived by two brothers and five sisters, the latter being the Misses Bridget,
Sibbie and Annie Kelley of Richwood, at whose fome the fatal accident and her death ocurred;
Mrs. Mary Joyce and Mrs. Nell King, of Chicago. The two brothers are Peter Kelley of Watertown and
John Kelley, editor of this paper.
To write an obituary of a beloved sister, the oldest of the family, who, to the younger children
has been a mother as well as a sister, is indeed a sorrowful task. Called away unexpectedly and on
the same day that the writer and his wife were celebrating their silver wedding, and who in her
suffering the evening before her death, had sent her congratulations, makes the duty a painful one.
But her mindfulness and solicitude for the welfare and happiness of others was a trait of character
so that others as well as her relatives can well bear testimony to it. She possessed to a marked
degree the virtues of Faith, Hope and Charity, and exemplified these attributes in a practical way
in her every-day life. She was a pious and prayerful woman and in her simple but effective way
instilled in the minds and hearts of her children the true spirit of Christianity. Her best efforts
were consecrated to the service of her Creator and next came of the interests of her family. As we
think back over her life and call to mind her many kind acts and words of earnest advice and
counsel; as we maturely pass judgment upon her motives, we are more than satisfied that she ever
strove to obey the scriptural injunction: "Thou must love thy Lord, thy God, with thy whole soul;
with all thy strength and with all thy mind, and thy neighbor as thyself."
She was naturally "solicitous about many things" along the line of her earthly duties, but she
did not forget to "choose the better part" which One in whose word she placed full faith promised,
"Shall not be taken from her." (Submitted by Pat Solon Rogers)

Miss Mary Solon, Native of Town of Shields Dies
Miss Mary Solon, a life long resident of this section, died this noon at the home of her sister,
Mrs. Abe McCarthy, 311 South Montgomery Street where she made her home. Her death took place at
11:30 o'clock. She suffered a fractured hip in a fall last April and had been confined to her home since.
Born in the town of Shields on September 22, 1856, she was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs.
Martin Solon, pioneer residents of that township. For the last 23 years she had made her home in
Watertown residing in the town of Shields prior to coming to this city.
Besides Mrs. McCarthy, she is survived by two brothers, John T. Solon ...
(I don't have the continuation of this obit but judging from the sheet I have, the other brother
has to be Patrick H. Solon who died in 1931.)
Records indicate that she died of pneumonia. She was treated by Dr. Bowen and hot water bottles
were part of the treatment. She died September 29, 1928. (Submitted by Pat Solon Rogers)
Peter A. SOLON of Shields, Wisconsin
Death of Peter A. Solon
Well Known Resident of the Town of Shields Passed Away Monday. Funeral Held Thursday
Last Monday forenoon the sad and wholly unexpected announcement of the death of Peter A. Solon,
of the town of Shields was telephoned from Watertown to the Juneau relatives. Mr. Solon's death
ocurred at his home on his farm xis miles southwest of Richwood, at 9 o'clock that morning.
It was known to his relatives and neighbors that he was in poor health since last fall, but the
advent of death so soon was wholly unexpected.
Peter A. Solon was born in the town of Shileds, May 8, 1869, and was the youngest son of the late
Mr. and Mrs. Martin Solon, pioneer settlers of that town. He was educated in the public schools and
has always given his time and attention to agricultural pursuits. He gave much attention to
dairying and stock raising and met with good success in his investments.
Personally, Pete Solon was liked by all who knew him. He was candid, outspoken, straightforward
and strictly honest in all his dealings with his fellow men.
Since his boyhood, he enjoyed the respect and confidence of his neighbors and during the past few
years was called upon to fill several local offices. At the time of his death, he was school clerk
of District No. 2 of the town of Shields and was chairman of the town, to which last named office
he was elected in April 1911.
Her served as a member of the County Board of Supervisors at the special May session in 1911 and
attended the annual session here last November, from which he was forced to withdraw before the
final adjournment. On his way home he was obliged to remain at the home of his brother in Watertown
about one week on account of sickness. This was really the beginning of the illness that resulted
fatally last Monday, February 25. The cause of death was lung trouble resulting from a severe cold
contracted two years ago.
On February 18, 1903, the subject of this sketch was married to Miss Johanna Barry, daughter of
Mrs. David Barry, of the town of Shields. The marriage was solemnized in St. Joseph's Church in
Richwood by Rev. Peter J. Franciscus.
Mr. and Mrs. Solon at once located on the David Barry farm which Mr. Solon had purchased, and
have made their home their since.
Her is survived by his loving and devoted wife and three small children, two boys and a girl. He
is also survived by three brothers, Martin Solon of Claremont, Minnesota, and John T. and Patrick
H. Solon of Watertown, and by two sisters, Miss Mary Solon of Watertown and Mrs. Abraham McCarthy
of Claremont, Minn.
Deceased was a first cousin of former County Clerk, John Solon of this city and was a nephew of
Co. Supt. John Kelley.
The funeral services were held at St. Joseph's Church in Richwood at 10 a.m. yesterday morning,
with interment in St. Bernard's cemetery in Watertown.
