Crochet Soap Sacks

Sharing is caring!

I recently found a new charity crochet project to make. It all started with an email from Lion Brand Yarns. There was a video all about these little soap sacks. Because they explained it so much better than I could here is the video.

They linked to the free crochet pattern found here. When I looked at the pattern it seemed very familiar. It is almost the same as my hat pattern, so of course, I had to make some. If you happen to be a knitter, there is a pattern for you here.

I found 5 unopened bars of soap while cleaning out cabinets, so I figured I would make sacks for them. The white one was my first attempt and follows the pattern exactly.

I realized there were a couple of rows I could eliminate from the next one. I made the one on the bottom right next. That one was also a bit too long for the smaller bars of soap I had so I decided the other three could be shortened even more. This also made them faster to finish.

The photo above shows the eight soaps sacks I made so far. The far right ones are shorter because the yarn ran out. I figure they are still usable as fingertip face washers. Some have bars of soap in them and some are empty.

Then, today, as I was making my ninth soap sack, I was thinking that what the soap sack design really needs is a drawstring to make it more versatile and so I set about thinking it through as I did row after row. At the end of the eleventh row, I chain stitched a very long chain of stitches about three times as long as the bag is wide when flat. This chain became the drawstring and I wove it in as I finished the last two rows. It was easier in my head, but not too bad to actually do. I was very happy with the finished product. I just love the striped pattern that the variegated yarn made on this piece.

So, if you are looking for something fairly easy to crochet that you can use up your cotton yarn scraps on, give this pattern a try. As the video above shows, these can also be used to cover your fingers like a mitten while you wash your face and/or body and there is still room for the soap inside with your hand. These would also be a great way to use up those little bars they give you in hotels or slivers of bigger bars when they get too small to hold. I had a lot of fun making these cute little projects and they meet my basic requirement of being able to be started and finished in two hours or less.

If there is interest, I could try to film myself making one of these for you to follow along with. Do you have a favorite new charity crafting project? Share it with us in the comments below.
